Yesterday, I met with my new art buddies (Debbie & Ann Marie) to sketch plants at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Looking at all the brown and recently cut down foliage from the last freeze, we were bit skeptical on finding a fun specimen to draw. Fortunately, my good friend, Carrie MacDonald (Volunteer Director at the WFC) gave us a VIP tour! She walked us over to the Savanna Meadow and pointed out all of the various colors of winter. What I thought at first glance was brown and gray dead grass, were actually various shades of gold, purple, red, and blue! One point of interest was the Maxmillion Sunflower (photo and drawing above). Our club thought it would be a fun idea to capture all of the various stages of life of this plant. I guess we are starting backwards in January, but I look forward to seeing the beginning stages from the seeds of this dead plant.
